My father, Alfred Loiselle was on board during Operation Crossroads in 1946. He never talked about his Navy days much, so details for me are sketchy. He said his job was "Fireman" and worked in the boiler room. After many strokes over the past 6 years debilitated him to varying degrees, he passed away last December 14th. I'm glad I found this site, so hopefully I can fill in the pieces and share them with my children. My now 4 year old son and him were particularly close. Soon, I may find some old photos he had, and e-mail them for posting in his memory. Thank you, Chris Loiselle

My father (Bruce H. Gardner) searved aboard the "Shangri-La " from Nov. 1958 to 1962. he was a senior coxwain on the officers boats. He searved with some great men and I am here to say thank you all who were there for making sure my father returned home safely. He is currently a heavy equiptment mech. and a CMC\RET (SeaBees) I am here to see if I can find anyone who knows my father. He has mentioned some names and one that sticks with me to date is bell. They were on the same boat. If I am not mistaken he was in S-2. compartment A-02-09-1L. I will never forget the stories that he tells of the Shangri-La  and the adventures aboard her. Bell if you do read this let me say thank you for befriending my father and please get ahold of me so that you and he can be in contact again. One thing I do remember is my father speaking of a fire in the Nuclear weapons compartment, while everyone was running for their lives he ate their cake as he says "Where ya gonna go to hide from a nuke" well I really hope to get some response from this and I thank you all.

Hello there! I a contacting you again to gve more information on who my grandfather is, and his role on the ship in the forties. His name is Chief Jim Elliott, he was the chief of police on the ship from the time in boarded in San Fransisco, the voyage to Austrailia, the then back to Hunter's Point, where he was Chief of police there. He states his title was Chief Master at Arms. He coached baseball on the ship, at Hunters Point, in San Diego, and in the thirties on The Salt Lake City, previous to The Shangri-La  . He was recruited in the early thirties off the baseball field in Greenbrier Arkanas, where he currently lives today. He states an officer named Thomas gave him the position of Chief of Police on the Shangri-La  , and that he was lucky, he was a engineering rate, and that only upper decksmen usually got those jobs If you remember him or you know someone that might, please contact me, it would be a wonderful gift to him. This site is great....my dad James H. Daggett served on the Shangri-La   during WW II. He has since passed away in 1990. He was a Seaman aboard ship, I am not sure of his exact title, but I know that he drove a tractor to load the ammunitions onto the aircraft. I have a few photos and documents that I'll try to dig up. I see a photo on this site submited by Jesse Brown Jr., I have the same photo of the mess crew, my dad is in the front row on the far right.

Went aboard 1954 after ship was fitted with steam catapults. As I recall, We had 1 C-11 Cat. and 1 C-11 Mod 1 Cat. A real prototype. (I was also on the Hancock (CVA-19) and she might have been the one with the 2 different Cats. Suffice to say, We got to The Philippines and Ramon Magsaysay came aboard to view Airops and both of our Catapults were out of commission due to sealing strip malfunction. It took us days to fix. Around the clock repairs by 3 shifts with a shot of medicinal brandy at shifts end. A gallant bit of engineering by the best crew in the Navy. (Midway excepted)

My brother, James E. LANDRETH, SM3, was a plankowner of CV-38. He hailed from the coal mining area of southern West Virginia. Jim brought his clarinet on board with him. He was an avid Benny Goodman fan. He probably would have taken the instrument with him on watch on the signal bridge.

I have some memories and feelings! about CV-38. During WW II, I was young outside machinist doing repair work at Pearl Harbor. I believe it was in March 1945 that I was doing repair work on the Shrangri La while she was tied up at Ford Island. While replacing a safety valve on I believe the No 2 boiler, it slipped and I suffered a broken right foot. Allthough I was not a crew member, I do have some feelings for this ship. My regards to all who served aboard.

Hi: I visited my brother, Ed Coulson, AMM, aboard the Shangri-La   when it was docked at North Island, Diego, CA, About '44 or '45. Can't anyone remember when I walked thru that hatchway on my tour of your ship. My brother had a couple of friends I met, Jerry Adams and Fred Jester. I wonder if they are still Ok. Ed hasn't heard from them. I met a Chief during that visit but don't remember his name and he probably doesn't remember mine either. I hate to say it but I'm not sure but I think the Chief and I went out on a date. Hey, it's been a lot of yrs. Smooth Sailing to all. Irene PS Kelly already wrote to me and also read my story of my visit aboard ship which is on the Waves National Site #1 and is linked to the Reunion Association site as "Good Wave Site" That's our local unit and then it links to #1. Can't remember the URL but then at my age, I'm lucky to remember how to connect on the web. LOL
